Lithium-ion batteries provide superior thermal and chemical stability making them the safest battery for large and small energy storage projects providing solutions that are:
Lithium-ion batteries remain stable even at very high temperatures.
Lithium-ion batteries require little to no active maintenance resulting in minimal downtime and maximum productivity. A high discharge capacity of close to 100% results in longer and fewer charge cycles, adding to the total lifespan of a system.
Lithium-ion batteries hold their charge for up to one year when not in use. Their low internal resistance yield a fast rate of charge and recharge, enabling them to handle high discharge currents while maintaining constant voltage.
A BESS is an energy storage system (ESS) that captures energy from different sources and stores it in rechargeable batteries. When needed the energy is discharged from the battery and supplied to C&I facilities, EVS, homes etc. The main BESS components include:
Battery System: Contains individual battery cells which are arranged in modules that form battery packs.
Battery Management System (BMS): Ensures a safe system by monitoring the condition of the batteries, measuring the state-of-charge, state-of-health and protecting the batteries from fires and other hazards.
Inverter or a Power Conversion System (PCS): Converts direct current (DC) from batteries into alternating current (AC) supplied to facilities. Bi-directional inverters allow for both charging/discharging.
Energy Management System (EMS): Monitors and controls the energy flow within a battery storage system. It coordinates the work of a BMS, PCS and other components. By analyzing energy data, an EMS efficiently manages the power resources of the system.
A BESS can also include safety systems, including fire suppression, cooling, heating and ventilation. These systems have their own monitoring and control units necessary for the safe operation of a BESS.
